‘One Year To Go’ photo contest

Northlanders of all ages and abilities are being urged to grab a camera and enter a region wide photo contest designed to mark one year until the official start of the Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011).

Organisers want entrants to use their imagination to come up with creative ways to spell out the phrase ‘One Year To Go’ - for example using stones, rugby balls or written in the sand – then photograph and submit the results.

The best entries will be used in local promotional work in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup 2011 and images that show creativity - rather than a high degree of technical proficiency - are being sought.

The photo contest is being organised by Northland 2011 - the group co-ordinating the North’s RWC 2011 planning and operational delivery.  (Northland 2011’s key membership includes the region’s three District Councils, the Northland Regional Council and the Northland Rugby Union.  It is also supported by local economic, sporting, business, tourism and other groups.)

Northland 2011 spokesman Stewart McElwain says Thursday 09 September will mark exactly one year until the official start of the 2011 Tournament in New Zealand.

“Our photo contest aims to both mark the ‘One Year To Go’ milestone and also highlight to everyone that Northland is well and truly on the way to being ready to play its part in hosting this exciting Tournament.”

As well as providing a venue for two matches (Tonga and Canada on September 14, 2011 and Tonga and Japan on September 21, 2011) Northland will also host all three teams for a total of 28 days during RWC 2011 pool play as they train and stay in both the Bay of Islands and Whangarei.

Mr McElwain says along with an opportunity to showcase Northland and its attractions to the three teams and their many supporters – and a potential cumulative worldwide television audience of billions – having them based here would also deliver millions in economic benefits.

The photo contest will effectively be run in two parts, one judged by a panel of Northland 2011 members and the other a ‘people’s choice’ winner decided by votes on social networking website Facebook.

Mr McElwain says entrants from the wider community will compete for votes on Facebook and should visit www.northland2011.com/photocontest for instructions on how to enter, as well as full details of the terms and conditions.

However, Facebook use restrictions mean the school and rugby club entries will need to be emailed to info@northland2011.com and will be judged by the Northland 2011 panel.  They will include a primary/intermediate school section, a secondary section and a third section for rugby clubs.

Entries open at 9am on Thursday 09 September and close at 5pm on Friday 15 October, 2010.

He says winners of all four categories – Schools (Primary/Intermediate),
Schools (Secondary), Rugby Clubs and Community - will each receive a digital video camera valued at $700.  All entries also go in a draw for one of several Rugby World Cup 2011 merchandise packs worth $300.

Photos must have been taken by the entrant and entries are limited to two per person.  Northland Rugby World Cup 2011 Governance and Working Group members and their immediate families are ineligible to enter.
